kimo / faq

Questions, answered plainly.

01 what is kimo?

A free, open-source video editor with no GUI. Your AI agent drives it over MCP (the Model Context Protocol). Cutting, keyframes, grading, tracking, captions, audio and export are all tool calls.

02 is it free?

Yes. MIT licensed, free to use, change and ship. Source: https://github.com/naman-sharma12345/kimo

03 which agents work with it?

Any MCP client. Setup is written out for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor and OpenCode on /install/.

04 do i need a GPU?

No. The renderer runs on the CPU and is tuned to work on a 2 GB machine.

05 what else do i need?

ffmpeg and ffprobe on your PATH; kimo uses them to decode, encode and probe media.

06 which platforms?

Linux x86_64 (the tested platform, static tar.gz), Windows x86_64 (installer; not yet verified on every machine, and not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows a warning: More info, then Run anyway), and macOS by building from source with Rust.

07 how big is it?

The kimo-mcp binary is about 15 MB.

08 will it flood my agent's context with tools?

No. By default kimo lists tools in groups, so the agent sees a short list and searches the rest with search_tools. Set KIMO_TOOLS=core or flat if you want more listed up front. Details on /docs/.

09 is it production ready?

It is an early engine with honest tiers. FEATURES.md in the repo lists what is solid, what is beta and what is not built yet.

10 does it send data anywhere?

kimo runs locally as a stdio server. It talks only to the agent that started it, and works on the files and folders you give it.

11 how do i report a bug or ask for a feature?

Open an issue on GitHub: https://github.com/naman-sharma12345/kimo/issues

12 who makes it?

Naman, as an open-source project.
